Elizabeth Whyte Schulze – 2024
During January of 2024 I toured Cote d’ Ivoire, Africa visiting villages for their traditional dances. Performed in the local square ceremonial dancers were accompanied by drums and the Kora, a long necked gourd instrument. I had visited the country earlier in my African travels but this was the first opportunity to see the exquisite masks come to life. Each area of the country creates masks according to tradition. The country is vibrant and colorful with a people full of pride for their culture and art.
Upon returning from my travels it was exhilarating for me to create a new body of work inspired by my travels. Through the colors of acrylic paint and the coiled basket form my artwork celebrates the vibrancy of the people of Cote d’ Ivoire. Each village has numerous mud buildings topped by a conical thatched roof, the source of inspiration for so many of my baskets in this series.
